Wissahickon Park Gets $50,000 More from Councilman

Councilman Jones allocates more grant money for Neighbors Park.

More than four years ago, Neighbors Park/Woodland Lot received $200,000 in grant funding for renovation. For various city bureaucratic reasons, work has been delayed until this month. That means prices have gone up and some original plans were thought to be scrapped.

That is until Roxborough's city councilman stepped up and got more project money.

Staff for announced earlier this week that $50,000 in additional Parks Department grant funding will be allocated to the park at Terrace and Hermit Streets.

"This will ensure that the park will get updated to the point we originally wanted and safety concerns will be taken care of," said Joshua Cohen, special assistant to Jones.

In earlier articles, Patch reported the update includes greening the park by better using rainwater, resurfacing the park's basketball court, adding safer play equipment for older children, painting more play surfaces, and other changes.

Additionally, the Wissahickon Neighbors Civic Association also received $1,000 in an activities grant.

Andrew Bantly, civic president, said work could begin this week. Due to the weather, construction plans have changed the order. Bantly said the playground should receive the update first and the basketball court in the spring—instead of the other way around.

"I want to publicly thank Councilman Jones. We have some loose ends we still need to tie up but this will go a long way," he said.

What about the other neighborhood Parks he "promised" to update? Namely McDevitt Playground? We have also been waiting, but its tucked away so its not on his priority list. He only does what can be seen so he can put his name on it! Scoreboards out the wazoo most that aren't even used. So unneeded but playgrounds like McDevitt sit! Not a man of his word just does things when its convenient for him. Maybe around election time?

Melissa, We had all the lights replaced and we are working on getting a new door to the building. Please let me know what other improvements are needed at McDevitt and we will be happy to take care of them, budget permitting. You can email me at joshua.cohen@phila.gov. Regards, Josh Cohen, Office of Councilman Curtis Jones.

Lots to be done there, new gym floor, bleachers inside are ancient, no heat upstairs for afterschool programs during winter months, blacktop in hockey court unsafe, playground equipment lacking, tennis courts unusable, ground all around building and Playground unsafe (broken). Proposals were sent nearly 3 yrs ago from East Falls Sports Association. Mr. Jones is well aware of the problems McDevitt has but it seems since we remain unseen we are conveniently forgotten.

Can you please send that proposal again? joshua.cohen@phila.gov or mail it to our office at 5462 Ridge Avenue 19128. Thank you, Josh Cohen
