7 Things To Do Now That Your Kids Are Back In School (And You've Called Off Work)

Call out of work and do these 7 things while the kids are in school!

It's a beautiful thing, the sight of yellow school buses driving up and down the streets of Roxborough/Manayunk, isn't it?  September and October is a very, very nice time of year in this part of the world...perfect day to call off work!  Here's my list of 7 ways to thoroughly enjoy a day without work or kids....

1 - Get a day load on.  This might involve your significant other being home for the afternoon busload of responsibility, but if you can pull it off I highly recommend enjoying this great weather on the banks of the Schuylkill at the Manayunk Brewery. Or....grab a backpack cooler and do #2...

2 - Walk the Wissahickon trail.  The cooler weather, combined with continued full foliage coverage, makes for a refreshing day on the trail.  The crowds are all in the office and school, so you may even be able to find a nice spot to enjoy a little cocktail and nature.

3 - Walk the Ridge. Start in Manayunk by the bus depot, and walk up the hill all the way to the Andorra Shopping Center. Plan on frequent stops—Crossroads is a great place to have a nice cup of coffee, and there are some decent shops along the route.

4 - Visit one of the libraries. One forgets just what a great resource they are, for so much more than books.

5 - Hike the Canal Trail. It's a short, very flat walk, with some sights worth discovering. It's a bit short for a bike ride, but as down-and-back walks go there are few as relaxing.

6 - Visit Main Street Music. Great resource for new and used CD's and other media. Ask them to play something you aren't sure of, or get recommendations in a genre you already love - local shopping at it's best.

7 - Take in a movie. Yeah, the theater on Main Street kind of sucks, but they don't check for booze, and the afternoon showings can be nicely vacant. Just don't tip your beer bottle over...it will make a racket at is rattles down the slope before crashing into the wall at the front of the theater...not that it's ever happened to me....
