AMY Northwest Rings in New Roxborough Home with District Honor

New middle school chosen to begin the school year for Philadelphia.

While beginning its first year in Roxborough, AMY Northwest Middle School will mark the year's start for all Philadelphia schools.

The School District of Philadelphia chose AMY Northwest to host the ceremonial bell ringing Sept. 7, which marks the school year's commencement.

AMY Northwest Principal Marco Zanoni said he is excited and honored the district chose his school for the honor. The middle school moved from Mt. Airy over the summer into the historic Levering building, which closed its elementary school in June.

"It is our intent to continue to carry out these important traditions and practices as we make our new home in Roxborough," Zanoni said in an August letter to new parents.

The bell ringing ceremony will "usher in a new era for AMY NW. We are very proud to be entrusted with our new home on the very historic Levering School site."

Zanoni said he expected dignitaries from the school district and city government to attend. In addition, he invited Roxborough lawmakers, like state Rep. Pam DeLissio (D-194), to the ceremonial event.

The event beings at 9 a.m. at 6000 Ridge Ave. and is the first day of school for the district.
