Cook-Wissahickon a Top Feeder For Masterman

The school had 13 students admitted to the school over the past three years.

It's clear that Julia R. Masterman Laboratory and Demonstration School is considered one of the top public schools in the city.

A recent Philadelphia Public School Notebook piece looks at how the school admits its students, and comes to the conclusion that, generally, those interested need to come in fifth grade. It's very difficult to get in at the beginning of high school.

One of Masterman's top feeder schools is in Roxborough.  had 13 students admitted to its fifth grade from 2009 to 2011. That's in comparison to Meredith Elementary and Penn Alexander Elementary, which sent 24 and 22 students to the school's fifth grade, respectively, over the course of that time period.

The school's principal, Marjorie Neff, said this:

“In many of those schools, you have a parent population who knows how the system works and how to work the system."

The article noted that it's nearly impossible to gain admission to Masterman High School without first attending the middle school.
