Philadelphia School District Sends Out More Than 3,000 Layoff Notices

It sent 1,523 to teachers and 490 to central office staff.

The School District of Philadelphia sent out 3,024 layoff notices today.

The notices were sent to 1,523 teachers and 490 people who work in the district's central office, according to a news release. The district said it had to make the move in order to present a balanced budget to the School Reform Commission.

The commission  last week.

The layoff notices for the teachers have been taken back for now, thanks to a lawsuit filed by the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers,according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The district restored full-day kindergarten last week. That had previously been on the chopping block.

Superintendent Arlene Ackerman said during a news conference last week that she hopes some teachers and employees that receive layoff notices this week could eventually get their jobs back.
