Public Education Rally Coming to Northwest Philly

The event is Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Trolley Car Diner.

There will be a rally to support public education in Northwest Philadelphia on Sunday at 1 p.m. in front of the on Germantown Avenue.

Rep. Chaka Fattah will attend, as will 8th District City Council candidate Cindy Bass, state Sen. LeAnna Washington, Education Voters Pennsylvania Director Susan Gobreski and state Rep. Tony Payton.

Kevin Peter, a Mt. Airy resident who is helping organize the event (and whose son attended and now goes to Masterman High School), said he is working to secure even more speakers. A senior from Masterman will speak, and Peter said he hopes students from Central High School, and Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts will also speak.

Mayor Michael Nutter may also attend, according to Peter.

The event is intended to encourage state legislators to work to restore education funding, which if a budget proposed by Gov. Tom Corbett is passed.

Organizers are encouraging people to park along Germantown Avenue so that spots inside the Trolley Car lot intended for the diner's customers aren't taken up by those who attend.
