School District Approves Tax Levy

It will allow the district to receive an additional $37 million in revenue.

The School District of Philadelphia's School Reform Commission (SRC) passed a tax levy increase at a meeting Monday at district headquarters.

Chief Financial Officer Michael Masch said the levy increase will allow the district to receive an additional $37 million next school year.

The SRC was required to wait until Monday to approve the increase because it had to do so after the city approved a tax rate for the next school year. Because the city did so later than normal, the SRC had to call a special meeting for the sole purpose of formally adopting the increase.

The resolution also authorized the re-adoption of the business use occupancy tax, the school income tax and a liquor tax, all of which will allow the district to collect a total of $837 million in taxes.

"Those four taxes in the city of Philadelphia are 100 percent dedicated to supporting the school district," Masch said.

The increase does not include an additional $53 million the city said it would contribute to the district.

All four SRC members voted yes on the resolution, and after that, the meeting turned somewhat contentious.
