Two Roxborough Students Earn National Honors

Two  underclassmen recently received honors from national organizations.

For his superior academic achievement, sophomore Samuel Robinson became a member of the National Society of High School Scholars. 

Finishing up his freshman year, Kahlil Rivers was selected to the 2012 Distinguished Young Gentlemen of America National Summer Academy, held at Florida A&M University.

Robinson earned his distinction for his academic work at Roxborough High School.

"On behalf of NSHSS, I am honored to recognize the hard work, sacrifice, and commitment that Samuel has demonstrated to achieve this level of academic excellence," said NSHHS Chairman Clares Nobel. "Samuel is now a member of a unique community of scholars—a community that represents our very best hope for the future."

Robinson received the distinction May 16.

The Distinguished Young Gentlemen program invites 24 gifted African American high school students from across the country to apply for the two-week summer academy. Rivers was selected from a large pool to travel to Florida from June 10 to 23 as he enters his sophomore year.

In a news release, the program described Rivers as:

"Exemplifying a strong commitment to vast educational opportunities, Kahlil has exceptional drive and moral character. Maintaining a G.P.A. of 3.5, he is an active member of the robotics program, JROTC, and Boys Scouts of America."

The Distinguished Young Gentlemen program shares leadership skills, establishes a network an outlet for talented African American men, teaches financial literacy, among other aspects.
