Video: Shawmont Community Protests School Cuts

Parents and students from elementary school demonstrate Thursday.

Continuing their fight to restore a transferred school police officer, parents and students shouted, clapped and chanted their views to passing motorists in Roxborough to "Stop these cuts."

Organized by the school's home and school association, a boistrous crowd gathered Thursday afternoon to let the community know that cutting its school police officer is not OK.

Demonstrators, young and old, chanted to cars at the school, who often honked back in support. Later, they marched to Ridge Avenue and caught the afternoon rush hour traffic.

The School District of Philadelphia , who was moved to a Kensington school, with a roving patrol of school and local police officers in February. The district has cited budget problem. The HSA has and wanted to get their message to the public.

Later Thursday night, state Rep. Pam DeLissio (D-194), whose district includes the school, spoke about education cuts at the Ridge Park Civic Association meting.

"Sometimes short-term gains sacrifice too much in the long term. That's what's happening with education right now," she said.

DeLissio said she arranged for students from Shawmont and  to attend budget hearings in Harrisburg over the coming weeks. State Sen. Vincent Hughes (D-7) , and encouraged the community to make its voice heard.
