Calling All Hardcore Athletes

Tell us your athletic exploits: Are you hardcore?

Monday night, I ran into a friend at Acme as I was renting a movie from Redbox.  She ran 13 miles that day and was grabbing a couple staples with her daughter.  “Nice!” I exclaimed as she told me of her run, “You're so hardcore.”

Driving the next night, I saw the lights of the Kendrick Recreation Center illuminating the sky.  “Who would be using the field on a night like tonight?” I thought.

Remember, snow and ice covered the ground Tuesday, and though the roads were pretty clean, the slippery, crispy-crunch was still covering the field. As I turned the corner I saw a large group playing coed touch football.  “Hardcore,” I thought.

Then I realized, “I am so not hardcore… anymore.”

I’ve climbed mountains, I’ve crossed a glacier, I’ve danced, worked out, and taught others to do the same. But now, I watch movies… and hit the gym a few times per week. Hardcore for me these days is hosting a slumber party for nine 6-year olds. So I began to wonder, who among us is hardcore?

Do you run marathons? Do you rock climb mountains? Do you play football in the snow? Do you swim in ice cold water? Are you serious about your black belt in mixed martial arts? Did you walk the Susan Komen three-day? Do you know someone else who you think is hardcore? Then I want to interview you (or them). I want you to inspire me, and to inspire others in Manayunk—Roxborough.

This is a community jam packed with all sorts of people—from college students to elderly; double-income-no-kids to families of all sorts. There are people who love to compete, and people who love to watch others compete on TV.

The Philadelphia International Championship bike race has its hardest moments in our backyard, and the Philadelphia Marathon turns around on Main Street. We have hills galore to workout on, and the towpath at our feet. This town is a fabulous place to be hardcore.

So in my continuous quest to help people become healthier, I want to inspire those who need inspiration with those whose stories can do so. So if you think you're hardcore, write me. If you have a friend that's hardcore, let us know. I would love to interview you, find out what makes you tick,  and tell your story.
