Great Escape: Sports

Feeling athletic? Play your sports locally this season.

Whether you are a sports pro or athletically challenged, this is the season to get out your fan gear, your basketballs, your gloves and your racquets and head outside for some spring competition.

Living in Philly gives us a leg up on other towns–we have the whole Fairmount Park system at our fingertips. But we are also fortunate to have a number of parks, playgrounds and sports clubs right down the street from us. Check out these local sports venues to get your sports on this week.

1. Take Me To The Y - Where can you go to find a kid’s rock climbing wall, and Olympic size pool, outdoor sports fields, indoor exercise classes and more? The Roxborough YMCA, of course. Whether you’re looking for swim lessons or a group of people to play basketball with, look no further than this facility on Ridge Avenue. With adult or youth sports, martial arts or other athletic classes, the Y has whatever you could be looking for.
Location: 7201 Ridge Ave.
Phone: 215-482-3900

2. Bring Your Clubs - The Walnut Lane Golf Course may be the shortest of the Philadelphia public courses, but don't let that deter your game. This course is beautiful, created by renowned golf architect Alex Findlay, and is very affordable. With a number of bunkers, a creek and the surrounding woods, you'll have to master your game to overcome these challenging hazards. And what better way to enjoy the nice weather than with a few holes with some friends?
Location: 800 Walnut Lane
Phone: 215-482-3370

3. Table Tennis - Get your game on with the recently recreated Trolley Car Table Tennis Club right next door in East Falls. Not only is the city's only full time table tennis club, but this June the Falls Center will be hosting an open table tennis tournament. This club offers seven tournament size tables and has a number of membership packages, including daily play if you're just looking to check out the game. The club also offers lessons on the cheap twice a week.
Location: 1 Falls Center, 3300 Henry Avenue
Phone: 267-335-2743

4. It's Gorgas - Gorgas Park is a beautiful place to play a pickup softball game, go for a run or just enjoy a day in the sun. You can download a permit on the park's website to reserve the gazebo or other park space for parties, picnics and gatherings, or just bring your kids to the ball field for a game of catch or a bout on the sweet jungle gym.
Location: Ridge & Leverington Aves.
Phone: 215-683-3679

5. Grab Your Skates – Don’t let spring keep you from chilling out. The Wissahickon Skating Club functions all year round, and in addition to open public skate and hockey sessions, the club offers ice skating lessons, freestyle sessions for the more artistically inclined and a number of other exciting activities for you ice goers. Public skating is held every Friday night, and there are a number of hockey, figure skating and other camps and clinics for all ages.
