Toss Frisbees in New Manayunk Sport & Social League

Inaugural season to debut with recreation organization.

Theresa Sharkey says the Manayunk Sport and Social Club is always open for new ideas. If there are people who want to participate, then the recreation organization will work to make it happen, according to the program manager.

"We're always looking for new sports to reinvigorate the area. If you are interested, we'll give ideas a chance," she said.

With that mindset, Manayunk Sport and Social will debut a co-ed, ultimate Frisbee league for the summer.

"We think it's something refreshing. For us, it's similar to kickball in how it (originated). There was a grassroots effort that wanted it. So we've tried to make it what they want," Sharkey said.

The club provides year-round programing, and Sharkey said the idea was to create an alternative intramural sport in the summer. Teams can sign up through the end of June, with league playing starting in July. Though no location has been locked in, she said it will most likely take place somewhere in Fairmount Park.

Philadelphia already possesses an established Frisbee scene. Sharkey said Manayunk Sport and Social wants to tap into to people who may be unfamiliar with the sport and desire to give it a try.

"We think it will be fun. PADA (the Philadelphia Area Disc Alliance) is huge. They are fun, and they have their own great leagues. This will be more of a rec angle, then intense competition," she said.

The size and scope of the league will depend on how many people sign up. The club is shooting for six teams to start, but can accommodate up to 12. Games are on Sundays.

The cost is $395 per team, with an unlimited roster size. The cost includes ref fees. Individuals may also sign up—$48 with a guarantee of seven games.
