Waste Watchers To Take To The Streets This Weekend

They will be volunteering at the Philadelphia Marathon.

While they're not focused on their waist line, they are focused on waste - literally. Waste Watchers is the city's newest green team.

At large city events waste watchers are, according to a release from the mayor's office, charged with helping event-goers "sort their trash, recycling and compost into the right containers, keep the streets of Philadelphia clean and welcoming and reduce the amount of trash our city's events send to the landfill."

The group was formed through partnership with the Mayor's Office of Sustainability and the Office of Civic Engagement and Volunteer Service.

The the new partnership is kicking off this weekend at the Philadelphia Marathon. Waste watchers are needed at the start, finish and spectator areas of the race to help participants and spectators sort waste items.

Volunteers will be provided with gloves and additional bags for bins and will bag the trash and recycling and help load them into trucks. For added incentive, all waste watchers will receive a free marathon sweatshirt for their time.
