'Inspiring Night' at Back on My Feet Fundraiser

Wissahickon Wanderers host charity event at Roxborough Track.

Like on many nights, a group of athletes took to the Roxborugh High School track at dusk to run laps. However, the Tuesday group was about more than just fitness.

The Wissahickon Wanderers Running Club hosts homeless support group Back on My Feet for its annual charity fundraiser. The nonprofit organizes runs with homeless throughout the city, as it works with shelters to encourage pride and a sense of self-worth for the less fortunate members of society.

Runners from across the city competed at the track Tuesday in a variety of events both short and long, individual and relay. Back on My Feet's Cathryn Sanderson said the group raised over $1,400 through registrations and donations, a figure that the Drumcliff Foundation would match.

"We had a wonderful night—it really was inspiring. One of our members summed it up when he said that he never felt comfortable doing other races but felt great doing this one. He said that he finally understood what it was all about. It’s not just about winning races," Sanderson said.

She credited the 80 people who showed up in support of the charity.

Volunteers spend time helping the homeless and organize runs throughout the week.

Some people, like member Brian, spend extra time with members, like Ashley. Brian—and other members—run closely with Ashley, who is blind. Using a black string, members guided her during the race.

In addition to Back on My Feet members and the Wissahickon Wanderers, the St. Lukes's track club in Germantown and both girls and boys members from Germantown High School's Cross-Country Team also competed.

The event was the first competition for the high schoolers, as well.
