How to Volunteer at the Bike Race

Organizers still looking for help at the June 3 race.

It's getting close to the main event—the , Women's Liberty Classic, and the Bicycling Open are set for June 3. However, volunteers could still pitch in and help this Sunday.

"We need additional course marshals in Center City and Manayunk to ensure the safety of all of the riders during the Bicycling Magazine Open and the pro races. This is a great opportunity for individuals, groups or families to get involved while watching the race," Volunteer Coordinator Cynthia Underhill said.

Terri Fries lives on the Manayunk Wall and has volunteered in the neighborhood for some time. She's handling the local volunteer effort.

"We will be meeting at my house, 167 Levering St., at 10 a.m. for those that are just doing the pro race. I will hand them a shirt, whistle and their assignments at the time," she said.

Winding through a major metropolitan area, the bike race involves a lot of coordination among organizers, and volunteers.

"Course Marshals are located at key intersections of the course. They are there to keep the course clear of spectators and debris so it is safe for the riders. They will assist police by informing spectators of when and where the police are guiding people across the course," she said.

Underhill said volunteers can sign up for the entire day of races or select just the Open or Pro races. The amateur race starts at 7 a.m., with the men's and women's races beginning after 10:30 a.m.

On Saturday, there are two volunteer orientation at Horizons Rooftop Ballroom in the, Sheraton Philadelphia Center City, at 17th and Race Streets. Volunteers are asked to attend one of the two sessions, at 11 a.m. or 3 p.m.
