Patch Pick: Giving to Nonprofits

We feature some great local nonprofits for service and donating opportunities.

Stepping away from holiday-themed lists, we decided to feature several deserving community nonprofit organizations. Some only do specific work within the area, while others extend their reach regionally or nationally. However, all are based within Roxborough-Manayunk

1. Bike & Build—6109 Ridge Ave., Building 2: Devoted to raising money to provide affordable housing, this national group with headquarters on the Ridge organizes cross-country cycling rides for the cause.

—175 Green Lane: This iconic Manayunk recreation center benefits the young and old through programing, education, child care, a food pantry, senior aid, and many other ways, and affects the surrounding neighborhoods.

—5301 Ridge Ave.: Located in Wissahickon, this community beacon services at-risk youth through tutoring, mentoring or live-in programs. Often, volunteers are needed.

—6012 Ridge Ave.: Servicing many areas throughout Northwest Philadelphia, InterAc offers numerous program for seniors and those with learning and social disabilities. It also provides affordable housing for seniors at its new building, on Rector Street.

5. Civic Groups—All communities. No matter what neighborhood you live in, a civic group is there for you to express opinions, preserve the neighborhood and be informed. All meet regularly. Visit individual Web sites for more info:
