YMCA Debuts New-Look 5k at Valley Green

Roxborough branch sets run for Sept. 29.

Reinstating a former tradition, the Roxborough branch will launch a 5k run in September.

The Roxborough YMCA Fit, Family Fun Run is set for Sept. 29 at Valley Green Inn along Forbidden Drive in the Wissahickon, local Health and Wellness Director Melissa Russo said.

"We are sincere in that we want everyone to stay strong and within their goals. When we raise funds at events like this, it goes right back to our members and our scholarship programs," she said.

The 5k is open to both members and nonmebers of the Philadelphia-area YMCA. In the past, the Y held a similar 5k but not for several years.

"We're doing it the right way this time... as it will be professionally timed and marketed with sponsorships," she said.

For $25 (adults) or $10 (kids), runners may register for either the run or 1.5-mile walk. Both start at Valley Green but go in opposing directions. Russo said organizers are planning for 200 to 250 participants at the rain-or-shine event, which starts at 8 a.m.

"There's a lot to be said for the Roxborough YMCA. We're not just a gym. We're a community center and family center," she said.

The "Fit, Family Fun Run" intends to inspire parents and children to run together, she said, in celebration of healthy lifestyles.

Along with its Philadelphia-area counterparts, the Roxborough Y discounts memberships for families with financial hardships, as it's within the group's mission to provide fitness access to youths. Funds raised go toward that outreach, Russo said.

To register, members can signup at the YMCA. Or, anyone can visit the website to signup here. People may also reach Russo at mrusso@philaymca.org.
