Roxborough Thanks Veterans, Armed Forces

21st Ward Veterans Association hosts Nov. 11 ceremony in Gorgas Park.

The Roxborough community gathered in Gorgas Park Sunday to thanks veterans and spur larger funding from the government to protect troops during and after service.  The 21st Ward Veterans Association hosted its annual Veterans Day observance Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. In addition to hailing the men and women who serve the United States, organizers called on state and federal officials to better fund veterans organizations. Bruce Hoffman, president for the Roxborough-Manayunk veterans group, oversaw the ceremony, which featured a 21-gun salute, taps and a wreath laying. Roxborough Remembers 9/11 Tuesday

21st Ward Veterans Associations hosts vigil at Gorgas Park Sept. 11.

Continuing an annual tradition of remembrance, the 21st Ward Veterans' Association will host a 9/11 vigil service Tuesday night in Gorgas Park. Starting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, the Roxborough community will gather at the Ridge Avenue park near the war memorial for a candlelit service featuring local veterans, police and fire officials, and clergy members. Eleven years after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Roxborough veterans continue their observation of the memorial "The challenge to eradicate the world of terrorism continues to be a difficult battle. Vets Honor Veterans in Hospitalized Tribute Concert

Gorgas Park event presented by 21st Ward Veterans Association.

For the fourth year, the 21st Ward Veterans Association hosted a veterans tribute at Gorgas Park. Organizations like Operation Bedding, Merion Concert Band, and Old Academy Players helped with a flea market, concert and performance for veterans from the Coatesville VA Medical Hospital. In an email thanking supporters, veterans president Bruce Hoffman shared this: "I assure you that when they returned to the hospital their life was changed for the better. They experienced the love and respect from so many people of our great community. There are too many people to thank and I do not want to overlook anyone," he said. Memorial Day Service Announced for Roxborough

Ceremony set for May 28 at several locations.

The 21st Ward Veterans Association is an active group of veterans. Appropriately, the Roxborough and Manayunk organization announced several ceremonies set for May 28—Memorial Day. President Bruce Hoffman said there would be four services Monday, each with an invocation, remarks, wreath placement, rifle salute, taps and benediction. The services will include: The ceremony at Gorgas Park will include a flag retirement ritual. In addition, residents are encouraged to bring worn and damaged American flags, as they will be used for a future service involving thousands of flags. On Friday, the 21st Ward Veterans Association will also host a coin toss fundraiser for the Memorial Day services. Look for veterans along Ridge Avenue from Fountain …
