AMY Northwest begins 2012-13 year with William Hite, Jr. and others on hand.
Dignitaries from City Hall, the PA General Assembly, Philadelphia Police and Fire Departments, and the School District of Philadelphia caused a stir at AMY Northwest's debut day in Roxborough Friday. However, as new Superintendent William Hite, Jr. noted, the most important attendees at the district's bell-ringing ceremony were the sixth, seventh and eighth grade students ready to explore their new home at the former Levering Elementary School. "I'm excited. This new school is so big," Azure Stokes said. "I came from the old AMY Northwest school, and there's a lot more space. But now there's steps, too," Troie Young said. The students began the 2012-13 school year at the magnet middle school's new Roxborough campus with a star-studded …

New middle school posts signage at Levering building.
AMY Northwest Middle School continues to prep for the 2012-13 school year—the magnet school's first at the Roxborough campus on the former Levering School's ground. Principal Marco Zanoi and staff work to transform the building for the Sept. 7 first day of school one week from Friday and the district-wide, bell-ringing ceremony set for AMY Northwest that day, as well. The new era for Levering school has begun and signage to mark the shift has also arrived. AMY Northwest increases enrollment this year by nearly double and wants to become part of Roxborough. Welcome AMY Northwest to neighborhood Sept. 7 for the sign unveiling and bell ringing at 8:45 a.m. in the schoolyard in front of the sign at 6000 Ridge Ave. in Roxborough.

Rachelle Nocito talks libraries within the School District of Philadelphia.
In June, Rachelle Nocito toured school libraries in a gloomy way—boxing and organizing books from libraries closing throughout the School District of Philadelphia. As the 2012-13 school year nears, Nocito oversees a challenging yet more positive task—opening new libraries and redistributing unused books to needy schools. "We're organizing and figuring out what we have, and now, as you can see, we're getting our shelves in order," she said. Nocito, with assistance from library intern Jonathan Burton, readied the AMY Northwest Middle School Library in Roxborough last week, as the school prepares for its first year at the former Levering school. Working this summer for the district, Burton usually manages the Powell House for the Philadelphia…

AMY Northwest opens in the former Levering School.
The last school year was tumultuous for many within the School District of Philadelphia, especially for those in Roxborough. The School Reform Commission closed Levering Elementary School, which opened in the 1700s, and relocated the Mt. Airy-based AMY Northwest to the historic site at 6000 Ridge Ave. Throughout the spring and summer, Principal Marco Zanoni oversaw the move from St. Therese in Mt. Airy to the Roxborough campus. Although the work is not over, Zanoni said everything should be ready by the first day of school. "We're really in a good position. I want to thank the parents for their patience and for welcoming the new parents. We're grateful for our new building," he said. Expansion to Roxborough AMY Northwest formed 33 years …

New middle school chosen to begin the school year for Philadelphia.
While beginning its first year in Roxborough, AMY Northwest Middle School will mark the year's start for all Philadelphia schools. The School District of Philadelphia chose AMY Northwest to host the ceremonial bell ringing Sept. 7, which marks the school year's commencement. AMY Northwest Principal Marco Zanoni said he is excited and honored the district chose his school for the honor. The middle school moved from Mt. Airy over the summer into the historic Levering building, which closed its elementary school in June. "It is our intent to continue to carry out these important traditions and practices as we make our new home in Roxborough," Zanoni said in an August letter to new parents. The bell ringing ceremony will "usher in a new era …

School District announces expanded seats for 19 schools.
The School District of Philadelphia extended the number of seats in high performing schools by 2,272 seats, according to a news release Tuesday. In total, 19 district schools will expand, including Saul and Lankenau High Schools and AMY Northwest Middle School. Starting the in the fall, more students may attend 11 high schools, six elementary schools and two middle schools. This comes weeks after the official closing of Levering Elementary School and the approved relocation of AMY Northwest from Mt. Airy to Roxborough. In a news release, the district said, "The 19 schools were selected because they scored a 3 or higher on the District’s School Performance Index (SPI), have capacity in the school buildings and can maintain the integrity and…

AMY Northwest Middle School will relocate to Roxborough facility.
It's official—Levering Elementary School will close its doors in June, making way for a middle school and dispersing its students throughout the area. Citing the excessive cost to maintain schools throughout the city, the School Reform Commission unanimously voted Thursday night to close Roxborough's Levering School, along with six other city schools. "We want to create an efficient use of school facilities to allow programs and resources to align that most benefit students," Chief Academic Officer Penny Nixon said. Starting in the fall, students from the school will be dispersed to Cook-Wissahickon, Dobson, and Mifflin schools. The district will keep the facility, and Mt. Airy's AMY Northwest Middle School will move in. One Parent Speaks…

It will vote on whether Levering Elementary in Roxborough will close and whether AMY Northwest will move to its building.
The School District of Philadelphia's School Reform Commission (SRC) will make its final decisions on school closures on Thursday. District officials have been to a variety of community meetings to gauge feedback on their Facilities Master Plan, which recommends that the Levering School in Roxborough be closed and that AMY Northwest in Mt. Airy be moved there next school year. They've entertained a plan to keep Levering open along with AMY Northwest in its current building, and they've heard from AMY parents who are upset their children will need to travel across the Wissahickon every day. The final decision now rests with the SRC. It will meet at 5:30 p.m. at district offices at 440 N. Broad St. to make its final decisions on the …

School Reform Commission to hold public meetings on Northwest Philly schools.
Following a process of info sessions held throughout the city, the School Reform Commission will hold public meetings Saturday afternoon to decide the future of two Northwest Philadelphia schools. In a hearing at the district's office downtown, the SRC scheduled public meetings on the closing of Levering Elementary School and the subsequent move of AMY Northwest Middle School's into the Roxborough building. According to the School Reform Commission, Levering has a hearing at 5 p.m., with AMY Northwest following at 6 p.m. March 3. In November, the district announced a proposal to close Levering, a Roxborough elementary school, and transfer its students to another Manayunk or East Falls school. AMY Northwest, based in Mt. Airy, would …

Keeping Levering open and moving AMY Northwest to the Ridge Avenue location was discussed at a school district-led meeting Saturday at Roxborough High School.
Could Levering Elementary and AMY Northwest co-exist at the same facility? Levering parents, teachers and its principal think so. "We would both fit," Levering principal Gina Steiner said at a school district-led meeting Saturday at Roxborough High School. The meeting was the first of several to be held throughout the city to address a number of recommendations proposed by the school district earlier this fall. The recommendations are part of a district-wide facilities master plan that aims to, according to acting Superintendent Lee Nunery, focus money in the best places to provide high-quality education to students. "Part of the plan is to reduce the number of buildings and put the money where it should be," he said, adding that it would …

Like the SRC said, credit deserves to go to the Melnick and other Levering parents for fighting to keep the school going. My hope is the displaced students can settle in at their new schools.   more ›
