Healthy Lunch Boxes

Start the new year off right with simple, healthy lunch options.

As parents start preparing for a new school year, healthy foods should be on the back to school purchase list. Why? Well, among other things: But that is just the tip of the iceberg. We often think that obesity is an issue related to poor nutrition, but poor nutrition can be the cause of many ails that you don't even realize, including hyperactivity, ADD, diabetes, eczema, and depression just to name a few. Furthermore, arterial plaque, liver damage, and type II diabetes do not develop overnight. We are what we eat - literally - and, consequences will show up eventually. Hello Jane, Thanks for the spell check. As for the "fact check" ShopRite does not cary Newman's Own Ranch dressing, though it carries many other Newman's Own selections. Since ShopRite is my personal local store of choice, I wish they DID carry it.   more ›

Smoothie Criminal

The difference between simple homemade smoothies and fast-food mimics.

Lately, my radio has been bombarded with ads for McDonald's new line of Smoothies. The public is made to believe that just because there's fruit in a drink, it's healthy, but that is just not the case. Unfortunately, a healthy smoothie by a large chain is hard to find. If you watch someone at a smoothie shop makes a fruit smoothie, you will more than likely see them put some fresh fruit and juice in a blender, then dip a ladle into a syrupy fruit mix, or add sherbet, or even ice cream. These added ingredients are filled with sugar and/or high fructose corn syrup. Thanks for the tips on the smoothies. When McDonalds first came out with the smoothies I checked the nutrition info and was shocked at the sugar content! I much prefer to make my own smoothies and loved the recipes you provided. I always find your articles interesting and helpful Carol - keep them up!   more ›
