Memorial Day Service Announced for Roxborough

Ceremony set for May 28 at several locations.

The 21st Ward Veterans Association is an active group of veterans. Appropriately, the Roxborough and Manayunk organization announced several ceremonies set for May 28—Memorial Day. President Bruce Hoffman said there would be four services Monday, each with an invocation, remarks, wreath placement, rifle salute, taps and benediction. The services will include: The ceremony at Gorgas Park will include a flag retirement ritual. In addition, residents are encouraged to bring worn and damaged American flags, as they will be used for a future service involving thousands of flags. On Friday, the 21st Ward Veterans Association will also host a coin toss fundraiser for the Memorial Day services. Look for veterans along Ridge Avenue from Fountain …

Roxborough Earns Main Street Kudos

National Trust Main Street Center bestows distinction on Roxborough Development Corporation.

A national historic preservation organization certified Ridge Avenue in Roxborough as a bona fide main street. The National Trust Main Street Center bestowed the distinction on the Roxborough Development Corporation for meeting the 10 standards the group establishes. "Through the dedication of our members and a strong network of volunteers we continue to reinvigorate Ridge Avenue so that it once again functions as a true focus to a broad range of community life and activities," RDC Executive Director Bernard Guet said in a news release. Roxborough joined 760 new neighborhoods nationwide that completed the accreditation process by MainStreet.org, a program under the wing of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Local's Book on Manayunk Offers Rich History

Thom Nickels's family lived the Manayunk history he wrote of in his 'Images of America' book

For Images of America: Manayunk author Thom Nickels, history, writing and Manayunk go hand-in-hand. Nickels knew he was interested in writing at a young age, often regaling his young classmates with stories they would clamor for and again. He hailed from a family of architects, an interest that runs through some of his other books, including another Images of America book about architecture in Philadelphia. “I think that the penchant for building and designing things can cross currents into other disciplines,” Nickels said. “Building a novel is a form of word architecture.
