If you're car shopping, you'll want to be on the look out for vehicles that saw the worst of Hurricane Sandy.
Information provided by AAA: Thousands of vehicles were damaged in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, but not all were total losses. AAA Mid-Atlantic warns potential car buyers that flood-damaged vehicles may soon be making their way to used car dealers throughout our region and across the country for resale. “If you’re looking at buying a used car, inspect it carefully for food damage. Also, you should research the car’s Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) prior to purchase, and be sure to contact your insurance company before purchasing a flood-damaged vehicle,” advises Jenny M. Robinson, Manager of Public and Government Affairs for AAA Mid-Atlantic. Flood-damaged vehicles can be shipped anywhere for resale, and they often continue to …

Manayunk fitness locale acts as drop-off point for storm victims.
To many in the Philadelphia area, Hurricane Sandy is referred to in the past tense. Utility companies restored power, and workers cleared trees. However, those in Northern New Jersey and New York still reel from the late October storm. The Wall Cycling Studio in Manayunk wants to help out those still impacted and will serve as a supply drop-off location over the coming days. "I was in Island Park, NY, this past Saturday (near Long Beach and Rockaway) and it is completely devastated. Nothing was spared," said Juliet Sabella, the Levering Street business owner. "We've named ourselves the official (unofficial) hub for Sandy donations in Manayunk." Sabella plans on hosting benefit classes Saturday and Sunday at the indoor cycling studio, in …

Employees help out, and you can, too.
It's been said it's far better to have a neighbor who's near, than a brother who's far away, but in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Americans across the nation have proven to be the best neighbors and the strongest of families. This past weekend, AOL and Patch employees took an opportunity to pitch in, packing two tractor trailers worth of food, water and supplies in Dulles, VA, and Baltimore. The donations are headed to Hurricane Sandy ravaged areas in New Jersey and Long Island. Want to join the relief efforts? Click here to donate: https://donate.networkforgood.org/aol "When a catastrophe of this size hits, we all feel it, both the hundreds of us who live in the impacted towns, and our colleagues who are watching and wishing they could …

Philly residents spearhead campaign Friday to supply Hurricane Sandy victims.
Manayunk and Roxborough dodged a Hurricane Sandy catastrophe earlier this week, but others weren't as fortunate. To help those blasted by the Super Storm, the Manayunk Moms group will collect supplies Friday for a weekend run up the coast. Carolyn Clement wants your help today in supplying Hoboken, NJ, shelter residents with clothing, blankets, batteries and other items necessary for waiting out long-term power outages and flood damage. "My husband and I are both from that general area, and have a lot of memories up there. When we realized how bad they got hit with the flooding, we wanted to help," Clement said. Both from nearby Weehawken, NJ, the Clements will rent a van and drive to Northern New Jersey and drop off items. Throughout …

No official Halloween policy for Philadlephia.
Following a major storm and news that other municipalities cancelled Halloween, Northwest Philadelphia residents wondered if they can trick-or-treat Wednesday. Mayor Michael Nutter, as shared by his aide on Twitter, said it's up to citizens how they should spend Oct. 31 following Hurricane Sandy. Lauren J. Walker, or @laureninthehall, tweeted Wednesday: "'Its Oct.31st, go trick or treat......Let me announce live here on @FOX29philly I have nothing to do with Halloween.' Mayor@Michael_Nutter." The City of Philadelphia's official Twitter handle, @PhiladelphiaGov , retweeted the message. Similarly, Joshua Cohen, special assistant to Councilman Curtis Jones, Jr., said he had heard of no official policy on Halloween. Largely a resident-driven…
A photo tour of our Hurricane Sandy coverage Tuesday.
Hurricane Sandy certainly left her mark on Roxborough and Manayunk, but as Gov. Tom Corbett said about Pennsylvania—we generally dodged a bullet. In big storms, Manayunk traditionally sustains substantial flooding. As Hurricane Sandy never caused the Schuylkill River to crest, Main Street remained mostly dry. Other than a power outage for part of Main Street, which was restored Tuesday afternoon, Manayunk exited the storm unscathed. Many businesses reopened Tuesday afternoon, with a majority prepared to followup Wednesday. Roxborough got hit harder in terms of disruption, but the large, residential neighborhood only experienced pockets of power outages. Several large trees uprooted—from Wissahickon to Shawmont to Andorra—but these mostly …
Sandy is mostly gone. What do residents and officials need to fix now?
The dangerous strong winds and deluges of ex-Hurricane Sandy—the massive, possibly once-in-a-mid-Atlantic-lifetime confluence of tropical storm and nor'easter—moved out of the Philadelphia area on Tuesday. Ill effects varied in severity throughout the region, though nowhere in the city or Chester, Delaware and Montgomery counties did they approach the destruction and chaos seen at the Jersey Shore, where Sandy had alighted from the Atlantic Ocean. The most significant tangible effects of the storm were widespread power outages, road blockages from debris and floods, and closures to schools, businesses and government agencies. Some milder rain and wind may linger late into the week, too. As of early Wednesday morning, Montgomery and …
