Manayunk—Back in Business, Power Restored

Hurricane Sandy mostly spared the usually hard-hit neighborhood.

After a weekend of worry, Main Street Manayunk breathed a sigh of relief and mostly got back to business Tuesday. Power returned to all of Main Street after an overnight outage, the Manayunk Development Corporation said. Hurricane Sandy—the "catastrophic" storm that caused Mayor Michael Nutter to ask residents to evacuate Manayunk Sunday—brought wind and rain Monday and Tuesday to Main Street. However, the Schuylkill River stayed at a reasonable level and Manayunk never flooded. Parts of Main Street—from Green Lane to Cotton Street—kept power throughout the storm. From Monday evening through mid-day Tuesday, Manayunk was dark through Shurs Lane. Throughout the afternoon, electricity returned to Main Street. "Hurricane Sandy has passed and …

New Manayunk Gift Shop Expands on Old Latitudes

Meredith Podob settles into Latitudes and Longitudes on Main Street.

Meredith Podob has an extensive background. But the industrial engineer, graphic designer and new business owner also boasts nearly a decade of retail experience on Main Street. Before Podob opened Latitudes and Longitudes at 4325 Main St., she worked off-and-on while in college at Philadelphia University and after for long-time merchant Joan Castronuovo, owner of Latitudes Fine Craft Gifts. When the opportunity came, Podob—long wanting to own her own business—decided to continue Castronuovo's gift shop. Her love for independent shop owners began as a child growing up in Southampton, Bucks County. Her grandfathers separately ran tailor and butcher shops, and her parents own Metlab, a heat-treating company in Glenside. "I've always looked …

Restaurant Review: Han Dynasty

Newest Manayunk Chinese restaurant exceeds all expectations.

Restaurant: Han Dynasty Address: 4356 Main Street, Philadelphia, PA 19127   (215)-508-2066 Rating: ★★★★★ (5) out of 5 stars Style: Casual attire Food: Traditional Sichuan cuisine  Atmosphere: Chinese décor Parking: Yes, Street parking (meters)  Service: Polite and accommodating Price Range: $$ Unique Feature: BYOB, delivery, take-out Website  Many of us have made our impressions regarding Chinese food by the greasy strip mall joints that deliver your order with a smile and a bag drenched in MSG. Only recently though have my perceptions been shifted to something levels above what I had considered to be authentic and truly satisfying Chinese cuisine. Han Dynasty has been making its name known across the Philadelphia area, and its newest …

I worked in restaurants while in college - do you really think ANYONE cares about cross-contamination? It's not just Oriental restaurants that have this issue - but when I order Chinese I order from open-kitchen model restaurants, such as Beijing Garden on Ridge, where one can see the food being prepared - I would be comfortable with being able to avoid cross-contamination allergies at such a …   more ›

Autumn Arrives Early With New Nail Salon

Main Street debuts new salon at 4237 Main St.

Betting on a new business is always a risk. But Night Chhour has good luck on her side. Chhour owns the recently opened Autumn Nails and Spa, which was named in the hopes that an omen comes true. "It's traditional for Asian people to have their mother or an elder chose their business's name. Autumn is my niece's name, and she was born in the Year of the Dragon, which is considered the best year," she said, adding it's symbolic for good luck, strength. Autumn Nails and Spa debuted at 4237 Main St. in Manayunk in late June—deep in the heart of summer. Chhour, from Olney, has worked at a variety of nail salons, most recently in Berlin, NJ. Aside from the lessened commute, owning a small business fulfills her dream of serving as her own boss. …

Cash Mob Returns to Manayunk

Effort to rally around local businesses continues at The Little Apple.

A grassroots effort to support local businesses with "flash mob" like enthusiasm will return to Manayunk later this month. Cash Mob Philly hosts its next event at The Little Apple, 4353 Main St., Manayunk from 7 to 10 p.m. July 26. Essentially, organizers spread the word for people to patronize a specific local business(es) through social media. "Cash Mob Philly is about showing that local businesses have good deals, too, and the ripple effect from buying at a local business, who also supports the local economy, is huge. It's something I believe in," organizer Shahrzad "Shaz" Kojouri told Patch when the Cash Mob first graced Main Street. In March, Kojouri organized an event at Main Street Music and the U.S. Hotel. The Cash Mob returns with…
