Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter and Councilman Curtis Jones will be among those on-hand at the ceremony Thursday.
The City of Philadelphia will reopen the Shawmont Trail on Thursday for public use after $1.4 Million Shawmont Trail improvement project was completed this month. The official ceremony opening the trail will be held on Thursday, March 28 starting at 10:30 a.m. Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter is slated to attend as well as Congressman Chaka Fattah and Councilman Curtis Jones. Several local agencies worked on the project with the use of Federal funding including Philadelphia Parks & Recreation along with the Philadelphia Streets Department and Philadelphia Water Department, with funding from the federal government’s TIGER (Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery) Grant, PennDOT, and the Federal Highways Administration. The Mayor released a statement about the cancellation of the Manayunk Bike Race on Tuesday.
In a statement released through his press office on Tuesday, Mayor Michael Nutter said that Philadelphia was "committed … to working toward securing a major pro cycling event in 2014." “… We are committed to working with the very best promoters to develop a complete event in 2014 that will reestablish our city as a world-class cycling destination,” he said in a release. "In 2014, we will be back with a premier international, professional cycling race, but we’ll also be honoring the importance of the bicycle as a major form of transportation in the 21st Century.” The Mayor's full statement can be seen here. Homestead exemption deadline is Nov. 15.
As Mayor Michael Nutter says, property owners lack any reason to refrain from applying for the homestead exemption. All the application can do is lower resident's property taxes. However, Philadelphians who own and live in their homes only have until Nov. 15 to apply for the tax break for the 2014 tax assessment notice. “There is no reason not to apply for the Homestead Exemption,” Nutter said in a news release. “As the City of Philadelphia continues to work diligently to evaluate and assess all properties to establish a fairer, simpler property tax process for property owners, the Homestead Exemption can decrease a homeowner’s 2014 tax bill considerably.” Philadelphia City Council, the mayor's office and the Office of Property Assessment …
