Local bank with deep roots celebrates five years in Northwest Philadelphia
Most banks are quintessentially corporate enteties, the absolute antitheses of mom-and-pop diners or street corner bodegas. In a world of cloaked mergers and power-suited might, East River Bank tries to be the exception. This family-run operation, with branch locations in East Falls and Roxborough, “really started around the kitchen table,” said CEO Christopher McGill. He and elder brother John “Jef” McGill opened East River Bank in January 2006, continuing a Northwest Philadelphia banking tradition that spans three generations. The McGills’ grandfather founded Roxborough Manayunk Bank nearly 70 years ago, and the brothers both worked in the family business before Citizens Bank purchased the brand in 2004.
