North Light Asks Manayunk-Roxborough to Dig Deeper

Long-time community center needs more this holiday season.

Manayunk and Roxborough residents can see the services North Light Community Center provides to the community everyday. The Green Lane-based nonprofit offers year-round childcare, tutoring, youth development, arts and recreation, emergency supports, parenting workshops, teen employment, and neighborhood access to technology—just to name a few services. North Light's Executive Director Irene Madrak says that in order to offer that many services, the community will need to donate more money. "At this point, our biggest goal is to raise more funds... Wissahickon Wanderers Welcome Back on My Feet

Wissahickon Wanderers host charity event for homeless organization.

One local running club hosts its annual philanthropic event Tuesday to aid an organization that helps the homeless. Back on My Feet, a nonprofit dedicated to "creating independence and self-sufficiency" for the homeless, partners with Wissahickon Wanderers running club for a third year of track and field events at Roxborough High School.  From 6 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday night, people can participate in a variety of events, with registration costs going to the nonprofit. Events include: A national group, Back on My Feet partners with shelters, donors and volunteers to coordinate runs throughout the week with the homeless in Philadelphia. Mothers' Day Walk/Run Raises Nearly $10k for Breast Cancer Research

Roxborough walk succeeds with help of locals.

Exactly one month ago, Roxborough residents and businesses gathered to celebrate Mother's Day in a charitable walk/run. The annual Roxborough Mother's Day Walk/Run had over 360 participates and it raised over $9,500.00 for Friends Helping Friends with Breast Cancer and the Susan G. Komen Foundation, according to organizer Maureen Pownall. Rich Ameye of Flourtown won the runners' race, while Lori McGinn of Roxborough took home the walker's prize. Each received a gift certificate. Linda Falcione, of Henry James Saloon, created a team of over 30 walkers. These were new racers who usually do the downtown walk. Manayunk Brewery hosts May 31 fundraiser for education program.

Move over, Jeff Foxworthy. Good Day Philadelphia's Mike Jerrick is about to pose a question for Manayunk residents: Are you smarter than a fifth grader? Helping with an outside-the-box fundraiser event, the FOX29 morning show host will lead an academic trivia night Thursday to benefit Breakthrough of Greater Philadelphia. Fifteen students who participate in the academic enrichment program will help people at the Manayunk Brewery in answering questions in the style of the show Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?. Interact Rebrands in Time for Spring Fair

Intercommunity Action debuts new name at May 22 fair.

Intercommunity Action now embraces the letter "T." At the annual fair for the Roxborough center, which specializes in geriatric health and senior services among other aspects, the group will debut its new accronym—a name many called it for years: Interact. Officially abbreviated to "Interac," the nonprofit decided to switch it up, Development Director Steven May said. "We went through a marketing study about two yeas ago. We used focus groups and the feedback we got was that people were confused about the message we put out," May said. "We came to embrace that people always add the 'T' in." Roxborough Earns Main Street Kudos

National Trust Main Street Center bestows distinction on Roxborough Development Corporation.

A national historic preservation organization certified Ridge Avenue in Roxborough as a bona fide main street. The National Trust Main Street Center bestowed the distinction on the Roxborough Development Corporation for meeting the 10 standards the group establishes. "Through the dedication of our members and a strong network of volunteers we continue to reinvigorate Ridge Avenue so that it once again functions as a true focus to a broad range of community life and activities," RDC Executive Director Bernard Guet said in a news release.
