Is Being White a Topic in Your Neighborhood?

A Philadelphia Magazine report on race has stirred controversy.

The cover story of March's Philadelphia Magazine, Being White in Philly, has sparked debate about race relations and discussions throughout the Philadelphia area. The piece cites comments from anonymous white residents of Philadelphia's Fairmount neighborhood in analyzing local discussions of race. Journalists criticizing the piece include a Philadelphia Magazine reporter; the magazine's editor wrote a column defending the decision to publish it. Most neighborhoods in Patches throughout the greater Philadelphia area see ethnicity represented in different proportions than in the city itself. The U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey of 2007 to 2011 estimates that 45 percent of Philadelphia residents identify themselves as black, …

Fit Notes

My First Marathon From the Sidelines

My experience of the Philadelphia Marathon.

I am a sprinter, and I am fast. The first time I ever ran a mile, I threw up because I ran it in 6 minutes 11 seconds, and I was merely in sixth grade. After that, I did not run more than a 100-meter dash until after college. On Sunday, Nov. 21, 2010, I attended my first marathon. Though I was merely a spectator, it was an experience to remember.  After walking down the hill to Main Street, I made my way to the sidewalk's edge, where volunteers lined the way to the marathon's half way mark at Green Lane.  I walked in front of Winnie LeBus where a DJ was playing inspiring songs and a drink station was manned with volunteers to hand out cups of water to passing runners.
