Roxborough 'Envisions' Better Lyceum Avenue

RDC hosts public meeting on avenue improvements.

Preserving the historical character of Roxborough at large and Lyceum Avenue in particular proved a significant issue throughout 2012. While some properties met the bulldozer, other property owners capitalized on preservation grants to better their home. The Roxborough Development Corporation continues its plans to preserve the character of Lyceum Avenue with a meeting Thursday at 6:30 p.m. In 2012, the RDC secured a grant for Lyceum Avenue homeowners (living from Ridge to Pechin streets) interested in historic preservation. Additionally, the Preservation Alliance hosted homeowner workshops. A third initiative of that project were plans for street improvements on street, all the way to Manayunk Avenue. Architect Ian Smith is tasked to …

The Foodery Sets Opening Date

Roxborough's new craft beer bottle shop set to open in 2012.

Neon signs advertising Troegs and Victory beer peek over brown paper covering the redesign of Roxborough's newest (and long-awaited) business—The Foodery bottle shop should open before year's end. Jack Lee, one of the owners, confirmed Tuesday that the Ridge Avenue location will open Dec. 27. This occurs about a year after plans were announced to bring the craft beer store to Roxborough. The Foodery currently has locations in Northern Liberies and Old City. The location, 6148 Ridge Ave., formely housed the Roxborough Development Corporation, which sold the property and moved down the Ridge. The interior has been completely remodeled and doesn't look much like the former office. Refrigerators line the walls, carrying 800 different types of …

Developer Explains Scheduled Demo at 480-2 Lyceum Ave.

Roxborough Development Corporation doesn't protest demolition.

Two longstanding Lyceum Avenue homes are on the path to demolition, following a trend impacting some Central Roxborough properties. Michael Cooley, a representative from property owner Villanova-based Provco Group, said no timetable exists but 480 and 482 Lyceum Ave. will be demolished, after the company deemed them unable to rehab. Although some residents oppose the move, the Roxborough Development Corporation doesn't feel these homes are worth the fight that it put up for other buildings. "What is important, number one, is to save all the significant buildings in Roxborough. The second thing is that we support and encourage development. That's how our neighborhood can grow," RDC Executive Director Bernard Guet said. "What we have to …

Neighbors, Developer at Odds on 30-Day Demolition Delay

Giovannone Construction, Inc. and local attorney disagree about conditions for 5901 Ridge Ave. demolition reprieve.

Developers conditionally agreed to delay demolition on a historical Roxborough Victorian home if neighbors drop their legal challenge, according to a spokesperson. However, an attorney for residents—who filed an appeal Wednesday—said that aspect was not communicated with him. Frank Keel, spokesperson for Giovannone Construction, Inc., said the company agreed to a "30-day cooling-off period" on the proposed demolition of the Bunting House at 5901 Ridge Ave. and will work with "community officials to come up with a solution that can save the building and provide for a first-class, sustainable redevelopment of the entire site." Hal Schirmer, retained attorney for four civic associations, learned of the delay Wednesday, but, he said, without …

Well property rights only go so far, right? I mean I can't put an addition 60 foot high extension on my house without approval and I sure don't think anyone would approve of me If I got a permit to knock down my house and put up a cell phone tower. I don't always agree with the "local chiefs" but that's what happens in communities. And you can have progress and preservation at the same time. It …   more ›

30-Day Demolition Delay Not Yet Reached on Bunting House

5901 Ridge Ave. is approved for a Thursday date with the wrecking ball.

Although official word to delay demolishing a historical Victorian house did not happen Tuesday, two local officials remain optimistic about the future for 5901 Ridge Ave. Giovannone Construction, Inc. owns the Bunting House and had secured city approval to demolish the property. However, neighborhood backlash led to a meeting Monday night with the company and members from the Central Roxborough Civic Association, Councilman Curtis Jones' office, Roxborough Development Corporation and the Manayunk Neighborhood Council. RDC Executive Director Bernard Guet and Joshua Cohen, special aide to Councilman Jones, were hopeful that developers would announce a 30-day demolition delay. However, Frank Keel, spokesperson for the Giovannone Construction…
