St. John the Baptist Alum, Mass Usher Dies at 75

Edward F. Martin died Nov. 19.

Edward Fitzgerald Martin, Sr. died Nov. 19. His daughter, Roseanne Westerfer, shared news of the long-time resident's passing. "My dad was was a graduate of St. John the Baptist Boys' High School, and he and my mom Barbara were married 52 years," she said. "He was loved by his family, well known in his lifelong parish, St. John the Baptist, and served as an usher at Sunday Mass. He was 75 years old." According to Martin's obituary, he is survived by wife, Barbara, and his children Joanne DeLuca, Westerfer, Edward Jr., Michael, Joseph, and Kevin Martin. He has nine grandchildren. A funeral mass was held at the St. John the Baptist Nov. 24.

Letter: Manayunk Catholics Should Unite

Janet Kempf of Roxborough weighs in on church mergers.

Editor's note: This article is referring to the potential merger of Manayunk's five Catholic parishes into two (or possibly three) churches. Read a priest's update here.  My name is Janet Kempf and I have been a member of St. John the Baptist parish since 2001. I am also a member of St. John's Finance Council. I moved here 16 years ago from Chicago and love living in this neighborhood. I have met many good people here who come from all of the Roxborough-Manayunk parishes. I was welcomed by everyone since my first day here, and I have made friends that I will have for the rest of my life.  I guess that is why all of the gossip, harsh words and falsehoods that are circulating about the possible merger or consolidation of parishes in Manayunk…

I prefer the merger of St. Marys, St. Joes and St. Lucys option. St. Mary's has good Manayunk parking. It will be an equal merger for the three churches, population wise, versus being devoured by a much larger St. Johns.
