'The Philadelphia Story' Movie Inspiration: Go Inside Ardrossan Estate

Take a look inside the historic estate in Villanova that inspired the play and film The Philadelphia Story.

The famed Ardrossan Estate, built between 1911 and 1913, not only inspired the film The Philadelphia Story, but it is a part of Main Line history, and Main Line Today got a chance to go inside.  Col. Robert Leaming Montgomery and his wife, Charlotte Hope Binney (Tyler) Montgomery were the first occupants of the 50-room Georgian Revival home.  Col. Montgomery founded Janney Montgomery Scott LLC.  The home has an extensive art collection, including pieces by Thomas Sully, Gilbert Stuart, George Healy and Charles Willson Peale.  The 350 acre estate is the largest undeveloped piece of land in Radnor Township.  To read more from Main Line Today and to see the photo gallery, click here. Spent many hours exploring the fields and woods of Ardrossan Farm as a teen. Met Hope Scott along the way. She was an amazing woman. Let's hope the Twp and local land conservancies can keep this treasure intact.   more ›
