Then and Now: Revealed

The location of last week's photograph is revealed.

Last week, I ask readers to identify a set of buildings in a photograph taken from an elevated position. Reader Bucky Swider was first with the right answer: Ridge Ave., near Scotts Lane, looking West??? There's no date on the photo, but it was taken from a railroad bridge overlooking the 4000 block of Ridge Ave. facing West. The buildings in the foreground of the photo are 4041-4055 Ridge Ave. Thanks to everyone for playing, and check back next week for another round of "Then and Now."

The last tenant in the buildings with the sloped roofs was a bakery(might have been called Michael's) you could smell the cinnamon buns cooking when you drove by.   more ›

Then and Now: Revealed

The location of last week's Then and Now picture is revealed.

Last week I posted a picture of a group of buildings next to a river. Reader Hal Schirmer broght the hammer down with his answer to what it was a picture of: That's Venice Island seen from the Montgomery County side. It appears to be the stretch of riverbank from the Arroyo/Carmella's grill to the modern location of the Green Lane Bridge. The clincher is the left side of the photo, the riverbank recedes so far back that the river touched the canal. There is only one place where that happened, at the foot of Leverington Avenue. A masonry viaduct carried the canal OVER the Leverington stream. The area was eventually filled in, leaving an emergency overflow for the Leverington stream. More recently, then the canal's emergency overflow was …

Then and Now: Revealed

The location of last week's photo is revealed.

Last week I asked readers to identify a seemingly random looking photo of what could be any backyard in Manayunk. Luckily, you guys are on top of things. Multiple readers said that the photo was taken at Tower St. from the Cotton St. stairwell at Boone, and they were correct. Thanks for playing guys and be sure to check back next week for another round of Then and Now.

Then and Now: Revealed

The location of last week's Then and Now photo is revealed.

Last week we asked readers to identify a black and white photo of what appeared to be a bridge.  This being the Manayunk area there was one gues that was probably going to be much better than any others. Several readers got the answer correct but two readers had particularly interesting insight. Charles Lecki wrote: Correct. Actually the old Pennsylvaina Railroad (Penn-Central) bridge/viaduct. The Manayunk Station entrance was at Green La. & Cresson, which has been closed off  when the trains stopped running from Manayunk to Barmouth/Bala Cynwyd into  Center City ending at Suburban Station. Roxborough's own Harry Schmitt who fronts  an A Capella group "Cornerstone" used to sing Doo-Wop harmony with his Pal's in the now closed tunnel that …
