Help Save Roxborough's Toads

Volunteers are needed for the yearly toad migration.

Want to help Roxborough's toads in their yearly migration across Port Royal Avenue? Here’s your chance. The Schuykill Center for Environmental Education is hosting a toad detour volunteer orientation at its Hagys Mill headquarters Saturday. Potential volunteers will learn about toads and toad handling and will be asked to sign up for shifts to help shepard toads across Roxborough once the migration period begins. The center is looking for volunteers to run from March until June. The training session will be at 1p.m., Saturday, at 8480 Hagys Mill Road. Check out more information here.

The group has always educated the public through walking tours, but following a prominent resident's departure from the region, the Schuylkill Center began volunteer shifts, too. "It's made a lot of sense. They are coming out of our woods of about 340 acres and going along the road. We certainly can help them out," said Claire Morgan from Schuylkill …

Toad Detour Adopted

The project that aims to protect migrating toads, was adopted by the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education earlier this month.

The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education has officially adopted the Toad Detour, a release from the ceter stated. The Toad Detour is "a well established volunteer project to protect toads as they migrate to and from the Roxborough Reservoir each spring," the release continued, adding that adoption comes after Toad Detour Director Lisa Levinson announced that she was relocating to California.  The announcement was made Dec. 10 in conjunction with the first public screening of the Toad Detour Documentary, a film by Burgess Coffield profiling the project’s history and success. After the screening, Levinson presented the Schuylkill Center with a Certificate of Appreciation on behalf of the Toad Detour.  The DETOUR Project (Detour for …
