Ridge Avenue branch invites public to JD McGilllicuddys Thursday.
Hoping to grow its local support, Friends of the Roxborough Library will host a second annual fundraiser this week. Jackie Merchant, local friends president, announced the Dec. 13 event at JD McGillicuddys on Leverington Avenue in Roxborough. "The Friends of the Roxborough Library is a nonprofit organization. Our mission is to support the Roxborough branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia," she said in an email. "We are currently fundraising for our exterior revitalization project, which is well underway, and for a variety of programming for children, adults and seniors including concerts, magic shows, and garden and finance workshops." Over the past years, interest in the library—and money diverted to it—has increased. In addition to …

The centers will be open Friday and Saturday.
The Free Library of Philadelphia has activated cooling centers throughout the city and nearby in an effort to respond to a relentless heat wave that is expected to last through Saturday. The full list of cooling centers is here. Here's what will be open in Northwest Philadelphia Friday (Saturday hours haven't yet been posted): - Andorra Branch (705 E. Cathedral Rd.): Open until 8 p.m. - Falls of Schuylkill Branch (3501 Midvale Ave.): Open until 8 p.m. An excessive heat warning will remain in effect until 8 p.m. Saturday, and that will likely be the hottest day yet, with temperatures that could top 100 degrees. Children's musicians present shows at Roxborough and Andorra libraries.
That's two—count, 'em, two—chances to catch The Cat's Pajamas in Roxborough this week. The children's musicians, who specialize in "very cool music for kids," present two concerts May 23 and 24—at the Free Library branches in Roxborough and Andorra, respectively. Each show is free and features the group, which promises to bring "a musical comedy twist to high-octane kid-rock." The Roxborough show starts at 6:30 p.m., and the Andorra concert begins at 4 p.m. Visit the Roxborough or Andorra libraries' websites for more information. Check out info on The Cat's Pajamas music here.

Local library hosts dating event Feb. 9.
Looking to fall in love with that special bookworm? The Free Library of Philadelphia will host a free speed-dating extravaganza throughout February in branches across the city, linking literature love nuts up. “Whether it’s to meet a date for Valentine’s Day or a just a friend with similar taste in books, our speed dating events are a fantastic way of bringing community members together in a wonderful neighborhood resource like the library,” library director Siobhan Reardon said. On Feb. 9, the Andorra Branch presents the event for single men and women between the ages of 25 and 35. To loop in the literature element, participants are encouraged to bring a book they have an opinion on for an icebreaker—you can love, hate, or just have …

Fundraising efforts are leading to improvements at local branch.
Signs are omens for many things. For the Roxborough branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia, a new sign welcoming patrons to its Ridge Avenue location is the first in several steps to improvement. Through both private and city funds, the branch will get an aesthetic and practical update over the next few years. “Our goals are to have a new sign and to improve on our exterior landscaping… So once those are accomplished, we’ll start on our interior improvements,” Branch Manager Bruce Siebers said. “We’re really looking forward to have some new furniture, as some are in pretty bad condition and have been around for a long time.” Thanks to local Friends of the Library, the branch has raised $9,000 on its way to the sign, he said. And …
