Dance One of North Light's Fundraising Ideas

Valentine's Day Dance scheduled for Feb. 9.

Manayunk and Roxborough residents continue their push to keep an iconic community beacon afloat. With a Valentine-themed youth dance scheduled for February, community backers of North Light Community Center help to stave off a shutdown of the Green Lane facility that launched in 1936. "North Light Community Center is working hard to raise funds in order to keep its doors open. The center provides a low cost after school program, summer camp and food pantry for low income families," parent Maria DePaola said in email. "Services have already been cut and more are in danger of being lost. The center's staff, as well as concerned parents from the after school program are working hard to keep North Light's doors open." A Feb. 9 dance designed …

Green Woods Community Gives Back to North Light

Students organize can drive and volunteer at the community center.

Thanksgiving reminds us all to appreciate what we have. Additionally, as students from Green Woods Charter School experienced, the holiday spurs us on to helping others less fortunate. Seventh and eighth grade student leaders from the Manayunk school organized a can goods drive and distributed their contribution at the North Light Community Center's food pantry. Steve Masterson, dean of faculty, coordinated part of the effort and discussed the importance of helping out. "I think this was an eye-opening experience. They really saw a chance to help people in need and wanted to help out," he said. Families at the K-8 school currently housed at the former St. Mary's and St. John's buildings sought to bring in two cans a kid, roughly 835 cans. …

North Light Asks Manayunk-Roxborough to Dig Deeper

Long-time community center needs more this holiday season.

Manayunk and Roxborough residents can see the services North Light Community Center provides to the community everyday. The Green Lane-based nonprofit offers year-round childcare, tutoring, youth development, arts and recreation, emergency supports, parenting workshops, teen employment, and neighborhood access to technology—just to name a few services. North Light's Executive Director Irene Madrak says that in order to offer that many services, the community will need to donate more money. "At this point, our biggest goal is to raise more funds... The recession has affected those we serve, but it also impacted those who give us money," she said. "We always get some community support, but now we need a little more." In the past, North Light…

'Life-Changing' Summer for North Light Interns

Community center honors teens at Manayunk Brewery event.

A federal agency, an environmental group, local banking and human services organizations set the roster for a variety of Roxborough and Manayunk summer interns. But these aren't college students. Through the North Light Community Center's summer programs, high school teens worked in real-world environments at places like East River Bank, the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education and the Environmental Protection Agency—among many others. "This program has been life-changing for all of us youth as we get ready to the complex work force," Samuel Robinson said. "Just amazing for all of us." Robinson worked for the Schuylkill Center through the WorkReady program—one of the summer internships celebrated at the Manayunk Brewery Wednesday …

Farmers' Market Provides Summer Essentials

Gorgas Park hosts McCann's Farm and North Light Community Center every Friday afternoon.

Even the vegetables were perspiring last Friday afternoon, with temperatures reaching the mid 90s, but that did not stop hoards of Roxborough residents from visiting the weekly Gorgas Park Farmers’ Market on Ridge and Hermitage Avenues. Typically, we list what to expect produce wise weekly on our site, but this week we were down at the park to scope it out for ourselves. Beginning before 2 p.m., (the market runs every Friday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.) customers began lining up for the freshest of fruits and vegetables that McCann’s Farm and the North Light Community Center had to offer. “It’s not like the grocery stores,” Roxborough resident, Kathy Cook, said. “It’s always fresh.” Cook walks to the market every week for her produce. Freshness …
