Public to Weigh in on Ivy Ridge Trail

Schuylkill Project hosts forum Nov. 19 for input on project.

Continuing to fill in the gaps and renovate along the river path, the Schuylkill Project hosts a workshop Monday on another Manayunk leg. Consultants and Schuylkill River trail organizers invite the public to the Manayunk Brewery Monday for the first of three discussions on the Ivy Ridge Trail. According to organizers, this is the area of conversation: "The proposed trail will begin at the end of the Manayunk Bridge at Dupont and High streets and follow the unused Ivy Ridge rail right of way on bridges across Leverington Avenue and the Fountain Street steps to the Ivy Ridge regional rail station." Over the past few years, action on the trail network along the Manayunk Canal and Schuylkill River has kicked into high gear. Work on both the …

Hi, Ines. I think I can confidently say the Schuylkill River folks aren't involved in the private developments. This will just be about the river trail.   more ›

Plan to Link Wissahickon, Schuylkill Trails Falls in Place

City designers detail bike path for Wissahickon Gateway.

A tiny stretch of land may go a long way in linking a massive trail network. Earlier in November, Philadelphia Parks and Recreation officials and contractors detailed a plan to close one of the remaining gaps along the Schuylkill River Trail. Bikers and runners alike may soon find a complete path between the river, Manayunk Canal Towpath and Forbidden Drive along Wissahickon Creek. Located between Kelly Drive near the Wissahickon Transportation Center and the Pencoyd Bridge behind the movie theater, the 2,100 feet of proposed path could fill one gap in the 120-mile Schuylkill River Trail network, according to Chris Dougherty from Parks and Recreation. The city and its consultants from Michael Baker, Inc. and Toole Design Group presented a …

Bike Path Project Continues, Finances are Fine

Delay in project not related to money.

Residents on Nixon Street may have noticed quieter afternoons due to some inaction on the bike trail project. However, Philadelphia Parks and Recreation says the path will get done. "We are in the process of resolving a few issues with that section of trail—nothing major," project manager Rob Armstrong said in an email. "Work should be recommencing shortly on the area off Nixon." Part of the Schuylkill River Trail overhaul linking the city and suburbs, the project's current phase is centered on a section behind homes on Nixon Street in Shawmont. In emails to Patch and posts on forums, like EveryBlock.com, some residents speculated as to the delay. Some people floated the idea that the project ran out of money. Absolutely not, Armstrong …

Bike Path Construction Concerns Some Shawmont Residents

City explains scope of trail project.

No one is flat-out against cyclists or necessarily the Schuylkill River bike trail currently under renovation. But for some Nixon Street homeowners in the Residents of Shawmont Valley civic association, the work on the trail extension has been nothing but headaches. "I feel like I lived across the street from a forest, and now a desert is there," resident Mary Arden said at an April meeting. "It's just so naked." The trail overhaul by Philadelphia Parks and Recreation Department left some residents from the rural section in Shawmont a little put off. Specifically, the loss of vegetation and presence of heavy construction vehicles seem excessive to them. "We all knew there would be consequences but I don't think anyone expected that depth …

Preliminary Fountain Street Steps Plan Released

Water department say an update is in its early stages.

Continuing updates on and along the Schuylkill River, the Philadelphia Water Department released preliminary modernization plans for the Fountain Street Steps in Manayunk. A descending trail from Umbria and Fountain Streets to the Manayunk Canal, the steps will be updated as part of a major overhaul along the river in Manayunk funded by the water department. Destination Schuylkill River released conceptual plans for the site in its newsletter last week. The water department said resident feedback will be included before an official plan is released. "The design is not complete yet. We are working with (resident Blaise Syrnick) and trying to incorporate his feedback to the (best) of our ability," PWD spokesperson Joanne Dahme. Syrnick is …

How Will Lower Merion Budget for Trail Bridge?

More money is needed to connect Bala Cynwyd hikers and bikers to Manayunk.

Lower Merion is poised to pursue a $500,000 state grant to help refurbish the Manayunk Bridge as a trans-Schuylkill connector for bicyclists and pedestrians, but township officials have yet to figure out how to pony up their own $500,000 to match it, as the grant application requires. The obsolete railroad bridge that angles across the river between Bala Cynwyd and Manayunk, just east of the Belmont Avenue vehicle span, would connect the months-old Cynwyd Heritage Trail to the recently refurbished Manayunk Canal Towpath, as well as Main Street, if an estimated $2.5 million renovation is completed. Philadelphia has kicked in a $1.3 million development grant, said Chris Leswing, the township’s assistant director of building and planning, at …
