Principal Graff sent home letter about Wednesday incident.
Four Roxborough elementary school students were threatened by an unidentified male, according to school district and police reports. Philadelphia Police spokesperson Officer Jillian Russell said four Shawmont Elementary School students reported that a middle-aged male scared them Wednesday afternoon at Ridge and Shawmont Avenues. In a letter released by the School District of Philadelphia, Shawmont Principal Michael Graff described the incident to parents Thursday. The man "grabbed and threatened a child, then released him," Graff wrote. The incident occurred near 4 p.m., Russell said. William Hite visits Shawmont Elementary School's HSA.
The School District of Philadelphia's new Superintendent Eric Hite was in attendance at Shawmont Elementary’s Home and School Association meeting last night. He fielded questions from parents and teachers and discussed the future of the school district. Shawmont also released its sustainability goals for the upcoming school year. The school was built in 1929 and is energy inefficient. Included in the plan are five steps. Introducing paper recycling, which many schools in the district lack, building a garden, and partnering with Lankenau High School students on other projects are all goals outlined in the plan. Home and school, staff welcome students in back-to-school tea.
"My names is Michael, and I'm going to start the third grade." New Shawmont Elementary School students braved the microphone last week and introduced themselves to soon-to-be classmates, teachers and friends at the annual Home and School Association breakfast and tea. Parents and Principal Michael Graff welcomed students starting their first year at the Roxborough primary school with a orientation breakfast. Kids could get a feel for the new environment, and parents peppered staff with questions on uniforms, lunch, and transportation as school gets under way with a half-day Friday. Parents hold mock bake sale at City Hall.
Emphasizing that students are receiving crumbs from the state budget, parents gathered at City Hall Thursday afternoon. In a two-part protest, parents, teachers, staff and students distributed cookies to Philadelphia Council Members to demonstrate they too have a hand in educating children in Philadelphia. Later, parents, staff and politicians spoke below William Penn to encourage the governor and citizens that city schools deserve better funding. Students from Shawmont Elementary School in Roxborough Friday received an earful, in a good way. Performers from the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz played a concert for students, as part of its jazz education program. Shawmont was one of five city schools chosen for the show—the only elementary school. In fact... "The group announced today that Shawmont was the only elementary school NATIONWIDE chosen for this honor," said Janet McHale, the Home and School Association president. The gallery depicts the students taking in the jazz show.

Elementary school treated to Thelonious Monk Institute concert.
Rewarded for its strong music program, Shawmont Elementary School Friday morning will be treated to a unique jazz opportunity. Performers from the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz will present a concert for students at the Roxborough school. The School District of Philadelphia, through the National Endowment of the Arts, brings in the peer-to-peer jazz education program, which also includes a concert. “As young people are so influenced by kids their own age, who better to expose them to this great American art form than those of their own generation?” Thelonious Monk, Jr. said in a news release. Parents and students from elementary school demonstrate Thursday.
Continuing their fight to restore a transferred school police officer, Shawmont Elementary School parents and students shouted, clapped and chanted their views to passing motorists in Roxborough to "Stop these cuts." Organized by the school's home and school association, a boistrous crowd gathered Thursday afternoon to let the community know that cutting its school police officer is not OK. Demonstrators, young and old, chanted to cars at the school, who often honked back in support. Later, they marched to Ridge Avenue and caught the afternoon rush hour traffic. The School District of Philadelphia replaced Officer Jannifer Downing, who was moved to a Kensington school, with a roving patrol of school and local police officers in February. …

Parents from the Shawmont Elementary Home and School Association have their plan plotted. Elementary school parents refused to accept the transfer of their school police officer without a fight and announced a protest next week after school. HSA Co-President Janet McHale said Thursday parents and residents will gather at Shawmont schoolyard March 1 at 4:30 p.m. after school. On the protest flyer, the HSA said, "Let's show the School Reform Commission and the local, state and federal politicians that we care about our Shawmont Family!" Local TV station attends Shawmont parents meeting.
Local media descended upon Roxborough Tuesday night to hear parents from Shawmont Elementary School strategize on how to save their recently transferred school police officer. Held at Ridge Avenue United Methodist Church, the Home and School Association meeting discussed plans such as petitions, letter writing, and even protest marches or walkouts. Read the story here.
