Be careful on the roads Friday night.
As you may have noticed, it's been cold out this last week. So cold, in fact, that we're expecting to get some snow tonight. In advance of that, the city's Streets Department has issued the following release to motorists. You can read it in its entirety below to get a sense of what the city has been doing and will do if and when snow comes, but here's the gist: go slow on the road, please help clear the sidewalks and be careful of one another. From the Streets Department: Commissioner Clarena Tolson urges all motorists and pedestrians to use caution on Philadelphia’s streets during today’s snowfall which is expected to start late afternoon and continue into the evening with an accumulation of one to three inches. Representatives from PennDOT and the City Streets Department presented a revised bridge construction plan to Blue Bell Hill residents on Tuesday.
Approximately 75 residents of the Northwest were on hand to hear about the future closing of the Walnut Street Bridge at the Blue Bell Hill Civic Association meeting Tuesday night. Michael Cuddy, a representative from PennDOT, presented the group's revised plan for closing Walnut Lane Bridge for maitinance and construction, a plan that would close the bridge to all motor vehicle traffic for six months. "Right now, the bridge is in overall fair condition," he said. "In terms of load-bearing capacity, the bridge is sound right now. However, we don't wan't to let it get into bad condition." PennDOT's plan, according to Cuddy, is to close the bridge to all traffic for six months starting in the spring of 2014 while construction crews replace …

Steps from Little Cresson Street to Main Street closed due to poor foundation.
The city condemned a little used stairway connecting Main Street to Cresson Street, according to Streets Department officials. About 12 people a day traverse the city-owned public stairway that runs between Little Cresson Street (aka 3600 Cresson Street) and Main Street, near the CVS, Streets Department spokesperson Keisha McCarty-Skelton said. Due to the shabby state of those steps, they are now closed. "The Department of Streets closed the Dawson St. public stairway... The stairway’s foundations were in a state of failure," she said. Little Cresson Street only has access from Ridge Avenue and contains a small amount of homes, Henkel Roofing and potentially an entrance to proposed apartment developments at the former Wilde Yarns Factory. …

For the Nov. 12 Veterans Day holiday, trash and recycling will not be collected Monday. However, no one gets left in the cold. The collection day is pushed back. So Monday goes Tuesday; Tuesday on Wednesday, and so on. Visit the Streets Department's Facebook page for updates.

Monday and Tuesday pickups will be pushed one week.
Following two days of storm-related delays, trash collection will resume in Philadelphia. The Streets Department announced that regularly scheduled trash and recycling pickup starts again on Wednesday. Unlike like in a holiday week—where early-week pickups get pushed back—those who are serviced Monday and Tuesday will have to hold onto trash. Pickups for those residents won't happen until Nov. 5 and 6. Visit the city's website for more information.
